How do I wash the Banarasi silk saree?

The knowledge of washing silk sarees is vital to preserving their shiny fabric health, thus ensuring their longevity. Before you start washing, it is essential to do a color test to ensure that the fabric isn’t running off color when soaked in the water. If it does, you need to take it to a good dry cleaner to get it cleaned. If not, then proceed as stated ahead. A good detergent solution, glycerine and lukewarm water are the next steps in washing off the dirt from the fabric. Run the saree under cold water to remove the soapy solution and gently pat dry it using cotton towels. It would help if you didn’t refrain from twisting the fabric the traditional way to rinse off excess water. This will cause the soft material to tear or stretch the delicate threads.

Removing the creases from the saree can be done by steam ironing or ironing at a low heat setting to avoid causing damage to the fabric.

Apart from their names, their designs set them apart significantly. While Kanchipuram sarees are known for temple-inspired motifs of zari work, Banarasi sarees are renowned for their floral Mughal-inspired motifs of brocade work. Kanchipuram sarees are generally reserved for special occasions, given their heavy weight due to the thick quality of silk used. Banarasi sarees, which are lighter in weight, are preferred for extended events.
